WASHINGTON — Pfizer Inc. said Thursday that it will offer a generic version of its drug Celebrex to consumers who are prescribed the drug to treat a variety of conditions.
Pfizer said the drug, which costs about $55 a pill, will be available through May 13.
Celebrex, developed by Pfizer's New England Compound, is a treatment for arthritis, particularly in older adults.
Celebrex will be available to patients who have received a prescription for the drug by May 13. The Food and Drug Administration said the drug is not approved for use by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for a heart drug, for an arthritis drug or in the treatment of high blood pressure.
"Pfizer is committed to ensuring that consumers are aware of the potential risks and benefits associated with using this medication," said John many, president of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "The company is committed to providing patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment."
The company said it does not have information on how the drug could be used for other uses, and that it will continue to work with a regulatory body.
The company said it is pleased that Pfizer's decision to offer Celebrex was announced shortly before Pfizer's U. Food and Drug Administration approval of the drug. The agency approved Celebrex to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the inflammatory arthritis of the hand, and ankylosing spondylitis. Celebrex is used to treat a condition in which an individual has an allergic reaction to a certain substance, including a blood-thinning drug. Celebrex is not approved for use by patients with a condition that causes pain or inflammation, such as arthritis. Celebrex is not approved for use by patients with a condition that may be caused by surgery or an injury, such as an eye injury or surgery.
Celebrex is not approved for use by anyone who has had a heart attack, or has had a heart attack within the last six months.
The drug is available by prescription only. Generic versions are not expected to come off patent or be available for sale by the end of the year, said Pfizer spokesman Tim Merritt. Pfizer will work with the FDA to determine whether a generic version of Celebrex is the appropriate drug for its condition.
